Event Details
Taught by Shane Hannan and Tully Dunn, two of Australia’s most experienced hemp installers this hands on workshop will give you the additional skills and experience you need to render your hempcrete home with AHM Hemp-lime Render. The workshop is being offered to trades as well as to owner builders.
Australian Hemp Masonry’s Hemp Lime Render can be applied as a durable vapour permeable render on hempcrete and other masonry substrates, or as a natural, breathable render over sheeting materials (like fibre-cement or magnesium oxide boards). On sheeting materials, a vapour-permeable liquid fixative or primer is essential to equalize suction, prevent delamination, and maintain moisture management.
Owner builders primarily get involved in their own hempcrete build to experience the satisfaction of having significant input to creating a beautiful, sustainable low carbon home as well as to build in a more affordable way. Learning the skills to render with AHM hemp-lime render offers the chance to save on outlays to contractors, as well as the opportunity to be creative with finishes.
Participants will learn to apply a Hemp-lime render base coat with embedded render mesh, as well as a top coat to a previously constructed hempcrete wall. There will also be the opportunity to practice a variety of finishes on pre-prepared rendering boards.
While many home owners love the soft off-white finish achieved with our Hemp-lime Render, AHM Hemp-lime Render can also be coloured with mineral oxides, painted with mineral-silicate paints or limewashed. Importantly all of these methods maintain the vapour permeabilty of the Hemp-lime Render.
The main applications for hempcrete in Australia are in new residential construction and retrofitting to improve thermal comfort, energy efficiency, acoustics or indoor air quality.
Our workshops are delivered by experienced trainers. Over the past 10 years Australian Hemp Masonry has supplied BCA compliant hemp building materials and worked with hemp builders and designers and with owner builders, on 280+ residential construction projects across multiple Australian climate zones.
AHM has also supplied the materials for a number of award winning commercial builds including the Mildura Powerhouse Project, the Innovation Centre at the Byron Steiner School, the Lithgow Women’s Shed. (AHM’s Hemp-lime Render was specified for each of these projects.) as well as for The Forestproject at UTAS where the old Forestry Building which is a part of UTAS’s inner city Hobart Campus has been refurbished with off-form hemp walls creating multiple teaching and learning pods as well as the housing for a 12m high lift well, installed by Shane and Tully. Our workshops share this experience.
